  • I truly believe that Phoenix is where the leftovers and misfits in the doctoring business go when they can't get a job anywhere else. In the 16 years I have lived here my experiences with local doctors and medical companies have had a strong resemblance to a Three Stooges movie. Only not funny. Note that I refer to them as a business and a company. Because that's what they are. And I refer to myself as a customer, which pisses the hell out of anyone who works at a doctoring company. They HATE when I use those terms; they insist that I am a "patient" and they are a "practice". Hey, my health is too important to me to trust it to somebody who is just practicing. I was referred to North Scottsdale Center for Dermatology because my PCP doesn't know anything about skin care. I don't blame him, I understand the concept of being a specialist, only my PCP isn't a specialist but few are. So he sent me to a specialist who could only tell me that I had a skin condition that needed attention, except he didn't specialize in how to treat it, only how to diagnose it, so he sent me here. Considering that North Scottsdale Center for Dermatology caters to the more affluent geographic area of North Scottsdale, where skin care specialists and doctors who, um, "enhance" human bodies are a thriving business I was surprised that I was able to get an appointment in a reasonable period of time and one that fit my schedule. My first visit didn't start off all that great. I had meticulously filled out all of their new customer forms at home from the online forms section at their website. Why is it that people in the doctoring business think their new customers can fill out their forms in exacting detail from memory in 5 minutes while they are sitting in a waiting room? By the way, "waiting" room is one term that's used in the doctoring business that is very, very accurate. So, when I walked in the door and proudly handed over my pre-filled-out forms the receptionist (without even looking at them) said "NO, you have to fill out THESE forms!" and handed me the same forms ... the EXACT SAME FREAKIN' FORMS!! I humored her and scribbled something on them. She never questioned me. Now you may be expecting a 3 or even a 1 star review for this place, but I know you cheated and already saw that I gave it 5-stars. What gives? Well, practically everything else from that point forward, that visits and the next visits that followed were awesome. The gold standard of how to run a doctoring company. Despite that first glitch (which I attribute to the receptionist having never actually seen anyone fill out their online new customer forms and hand-carry them in) she and everyone else were like one of the better TV doctoring shows. In fact, they all kinda look like TV actors, especially all those GQ model guys walking around in designer scrubs. Dr. Anthony Petelin and the people who work with him seem to be 180 degrees opposite of nearly every other doctoring-type I've met in Phoenix. They are all genuinely nice, they listen to you, they're funny and laugh (or at least pretend to laugh) at your jokes, they spend time with you without looking at their watches, and they actually remember who you are from visit to visit. Between Dr. Petelin and his staff there wasn't one thing they did that wasn't explained in complete detail. Now, how many times can you say that about what other doctors tell you? I had to be cut up a bit, and I don't care if you're a super hero, anytime somebody sticks a knife into your body you're concerned, right? As was I. But it all went so smooth, with a play-by-play of every move, that I forgot all concerns. When I walked out I looked like one of Frankenstein's botched experiments, but I was assured that was very temporary. And that came to pass. By the time the threads were pulled out and I looked at the wound later that day the "scar" was virtually invisible. That's the bottom line ... whatever your beef about the way they run their office, or their billing, or their scheduling (and there seem to be quite a few complaints about those), what really counts is did they fix you and did they leave you looking at least as good and maybe better than you did before? Dr. Petelin did. And that's why I give him and his staff 5-stars and my personal recommendation.
