  • Despite Mandalay's mandatory $40/night resort fee, you still have to pay extra for some of the amenities including this nicer gym. At least there is a free "Cardio Center" option which I'll describe later. The paid gym is $30 for a day pass which also includes spa (hot tub and sauna) access. Unfortunately, all of the spa options are single-sex, so I wouldn't be able to enjoy them with my girlfriend. Their excuse for gender segregation is that the spa is clothing optional, and that's fine, but it sucks for those of us who would like to enjoy the facilities with mixed gender friends. There are lots of ways they could work around this, such as making one side clothing required and the other one clothing optional (any gender). Or they could make one side clothing optional (females only) and make the other one clothing optional (anyone). Still, having access to a single sex sauna and hot tub after working out is better than nothing. The gym portion is fairly large and didn't seem busy. There were cardio machines plus weight machines and I'm pretty sure it had plenty of free weights. The spa and gym are open until 8pm. They let me take a quick look before deciding whether to buy a day pass, and that's when things went sour. I tried to buy the $30 day pass and they asked for my name and room number. I gave them my room number and keycard and my girlfriend's name since she booked our room. They verified that her name was on the room, but refused to sell me a day pass because my name wasn't on it too. Even though I wasn't trying to charge it to the room (was paying cash) and I had the room keycard. We had been hoping to use the gym/spa regularly during our weeklong stay, but after that lame experience, we never went back. If you do go, just make sure you're listed on the room reservation. The person who booked the room can call the front desk to set this up if you didn't do it at checkin. Instead we used the free "Cardio Center". It wasn't so bad. It is open 24 hours (unlike the paid gym which closes at 8) and I was able to get in with just my card key (unlike the paid gym which rejected me because the room wasn't in my name), and they offer hand towels and have a chilled water dispenser at the end of one of the back cardio rows. They also have a small freeweight section with dumbells, a tree of fixed-weight barbells, and a couple little workout benches. They don't have any weight machines, nor do they have olympic-style bars you can add plates to for bench pressing and such. No squat rack or bench press or similar. Still, it's a decent workout room and was a much better experience than trying to pay $30 and getting rejected at the paid gym.
