I was hesitant to try Sweet Jesus prior to it opening on Eglinton, mainly because of a Toronto Life or Toronto Star (I can't remember which) article complaining that it was over-hyped and not worth the wait. Glad I decided to try it for myself.
On a rainy day my colleagues and I joined a vendor of ours for lunch at La Carnita, and naturally, we (intentionally) wandered into Sweet Jesus. It was about 1:30pm - no line up so we took a seat inside.
Service was friendly and good. Immediately upon entering a staff member offered each one of us menus, handing each piece of cardboard to us personally. We placed our order and watched as each of our "mini pimp" (small sized ice cream) orders was made.
The soft serve is poured into a cone or cup and then rolled in a list of set ingredients.
I have to commend the staff for their patience as we all oohed and ahhed over each order as it became ready, setting up our smartphones to take the perfect pic. I imagine this type of behaviour is common and probably pretty irritating after a while. The staff were very accommodating to what I presume was probably a real annoyance. :)
Anyway, the combos are delicious and you really can pick out each nugget of flavour. Yes, it's "just" soft serve ice cream with toppings but it a very very good quality soft serve (probably full of every bad-for-you chemical and fat) but it's wonderfully dense, creamy and rich and doesn't melt immediately.
Screw you Toronto food-critic pros--you were wrong. Sweet Jesus is devilishly good.
I'd also like to mention that this place was immaculate.
