  • After dining at Le Cirque (the other 1-star Michelin rating), we have a certain expectation for Micheal Mina. Immediately we noticed that Michael Mina is less formal than Le Cirque. There were people in jeans and T-shirt; some in way too casual for fine dining but guess it's Vegas. It was also louder than other fine dining places. To the food, we ordered the chef's tasting menu and here's the breakdown: 1) Unlike other fine dining restaurants, the bread selection is non-existent. You get one cold bread while other places you'd get a huge basket with numerous selections that are warm to indicate fresh baked = minus 1 star. 2) First course - caviar parfait. Very good. Portion is small but very well-balanced flavor of slightly salty from the caviar to the citric from the tomatoes, and slight crunch from the toast. 3) Second course - tuna tartar (prepared at table) with quail egg, pine nut, and sesame oil. Good; the tuna was fresh. 4) Third course - miso glazed chilean sea bass and dumpling. The sea bass was tender and tasty. The dumpling was so-so, nothing special. The broth was what made this dish. Light but very flavorful. 5) Fourth course - lobster pot pie. We expected more after reading all the reviews but this was ok. We were glad that we didn't order the full course 'cause this dish is very rich. Because it's a tasting menu item, portion is smaller; you get about 4 small pieces of lobster and some pieces were overcooked. The sauce is very rich but nothing special. 6) Fifth course - pre sliced Wagyu beef rib-eye with foie gras. The foie gras was seared just right but small. The Wagyu beef was ok, not tender enough but was cooked to perfect medium rare as requested. 7) Dessert - because it was our anniversary dinner, we each got an extra cheesecake dessert with handwritten "Happy anniversary" on the plate. The cheesecake was light and tasty, not too sweet. For the dessert that comes with the tasting menu, there were 3 items: a root-beer float (good but not spectacular), a warm cookie (very good), and a candy bar that taste like a chocolate tart (very good). As for service, it was excellent. From our server to the staff, everyone was very friendly and attentive. Overall, this place is a solid 3 to us, not enough to be a 4-star.
