| - OH MY DEAR GOD, WHY HAVE I NEVER BEEN HERE?!
I have heard of Lotus of Siam in the past - initially on Top Chef Vegas and then on other reviews of James Beard award winners and other nerdy food lovers things. I decided I MUST try it, so I made a reservation on a Friday night right after we got to town. I was so pleased with this decision.
Lotus is in a strip mall off the strip so you will need a car, a taxi, or an Uber/Lyft to get here. Everything else around it looks a little industrial or sketch and maybe there was a naughty club nearby, but it doesn't matter, just go.
I made a reservation and they say they hold your reservation for precisely...3 minutes...so be on time. We got there right in time, but do allow for traffic when you are coming from the Strip.
I would recommend perusing the menu before you get here. I not only read the menu front to back online (there are a lot of options), I also read some articles about the best things to get here. Of course, when I got there I read the menu again. It is all so exciting, but apparently what they have that many other Thai places don't is Northern Thai cuisine and a killer riesling menu.
We started by ordering an off dry riesling since we aren't much into sweet wines but wanted to try one to complement our spicy dishes. We got a bottle and were not disappointing. Apparently they have one of the best riesling menus of anywhere around and they really do go well with Thai food. Try some!
As for the food, I went with the waiter's recommendation of Nam Kao Tod. That's crispy rice with sour cubed pork sausages, cilantro, onions, ground dry chiles, ginger, peanuts, and lime juice. I have never had anything like this. We went with 5 out of 10 on spice level to see what we were working with here and it was pretty spicy and it was fucking delicious. The crispy rice was a new one on me, it was like each individual piece of rice had been fried in spices and was individually crunchy and flavorful. I mean, it was a home run.
For entrees, we went Northern Thai to see what that was all about. I got Kang Ka Noon which is spicy young jack fruit curry. I mainly got this because I've never had jack fruit and I wanted that. I got it with pork, 5 out of 10 on spice. The curry was not thick, almost more like a stew. Jack fruit has an artichoke-like consistency so if you don't like that, you may not like this. Again, I have never had anything like this and we enjoyed it. The BF ordered the Sai Oua which is Northern style pork sausage. It was ground pork with herbs and spices and come pretty much medium spiced. It was sliced on the plate. I don't even know what is going on with this sausage, but we were in LOVE with it. What is that spice in there? We spent a lot of time trying to place it...anise? Nutmeg? Other? Just get this, it is soooooo goooood. We had all this with some sticky rice (and the curry also came with rice so that was a DOH on our part...).
I must mention that this place is deceptively enormous inside and can seat a lot of people, but there are a lot of people there so be prepared to wait if you have no reservations. HOWEVER, despite the crush of people there, the waitstaff are really on point. They have bluetooth earpieces and talk to each other and everything just flows. Really a good setup.
I was DELIGHTED, ECSTATIC, OVERWHELMED WITH JOY about Lotus of Siam. I WILL be back on every trip to Vegas.
