| - I must say, it was with hesitation that I booked this hotel after reading the reviews on here. However, after a two-night stay I can say the hotel is great for the price and you really have to be careful about trusting people's unreasonable hotel reviews on here. Allow me to explain:
For starters, I got two rooms for me and five friends at roughly $90 per night for two nights, not including the obligatory resort fee. This is impressive considering it was an NCAA tournament weekend in March and pretty much everything else was significantly more expensive. The location is great (unless, of course, you're looking to hang out on the strip)...you can take an elevator downstairs, walk out the front door and be at the madness that is the Fremont Street Experience, which is way cooler than the strip in my humble opinion. When I first arrived at the hotel from the airport at 9:30 a.m. on a Friday, I figured it was a long shot but I was going to try and check in to the rooms early. There was no line and, surprisingly, the friendly lady working the front desk quickly checked me in no problem! This was great because I was able to put my stuff down/get settled, have breakfast at the McDonalds in the hotel, play in an 11 a.m. poker tournament at the Golden Nugget, have lunch at the Subway in the hotel, come back to one of the rooms for a much-needed nap (my flight departed Orange County at 7:25 a.m!), have dinner at the Mexican restaurant called Zaba's in the hotel before my friends got into town later that evening and the debauchery commenced.
As for the rooms, they were simple and perhaps a little outdated despite some renovations, but this is no reason to give the place a negative review. The rooms were clean, beds were comfortable, wifi worked really well and, despite all the reviews on here to the contrary, we never had a problem with no hot water in the shower or loud noises next door due to thin walls in either room. The only obviously "un-renovated" part of the room was the large dresser/desk that also serves as a TV stand. This particular piece of furniture had wood that wasn't in great shape and has seen better days, but again I ask if this really is worth a negative review? Definitely not.
The only thing to "watch out for" is if you're planning on going to bed early then you should probably ask for a room not facing Fremont Street seeing as the concert music is loud and doesn't stop till 1 or 2 a.m. The room I stayed in was facing Fremont Street but this wasn't a problem at all because we weren't in bed that early (and frankly, why would you be in Vegas?) The room three of my other friends stayed in across the hall was facing train tracks -- definitely not as nice a view but according to them it was quiet and they never heard trains go by. In case you need specifics, the rooms were both in the north tower, #1420 (facing Fremont Street) and #1419 (facing the train tracks).
Truth be told we didn't spend much time gambling here -- most of our time gambling (and drinking) was spent at The D and Golden Nugget, but when we did we found the dealers really friendly and entertaining and the minimum bets low. The food options were fine and for the most part familiar choices like the ones I ate at on my first day.
All in all, this was a great trip and I encourage you to give The Plaza a shot if you're looking to experience Downtown Las Vegas!!!
