  • i had high expectations. i should have known better. sigh. it's set in a cool location off of scottsdale rd, just north of the fashion square, tucked into one of those new, hip condo/loft/fancy places. the decor is pretty cool - and the open kitchen concept would have been awesome if a) i could have seen what they were doing and b) if it wasn't so dang dark! the optometry student in me was aghast at the dearth of light in the kitchen.... perhaps that;s why so many of our courses were amiss? i think the concept has been beat to death here, so i'll skip that. the husband and i decided to NOT do a wine-pairing (as we aren't big on any non-white wines... or wine for that matter), and decided to cross off our list anything that was not to our liking - which we decided was anything commonplace that we could get anywhere. so out went strip steak, shrimp... and some other things so normal i've completely forgotten them. we left uni, kangaroo, fluke, sea bass, and a couple other things on there. our only requests - no raw onions for me (weird allergy/sensitivity thing), and no ginger for the husband (apparently he thought we were at a sushi bar and he was going to be force-fed heaps of raw ginger?). amuse bouche: something strange and nondescript, like melons and meat? melons, pine nuts and something else that is atypical. now, i'm ALLLLLL for the experimental tastes, but some tastes just don't work. ever. first course: curried root veggie soup with popped sesame seed oil stuff for me - eh. it was ok, but there was TOO much soup for a curry soup. i wouldn't die if i never had tasted that. husband had an endive/pear/green onion salad - that tasted like oily green onions. super onion-y. in summary, we were disappointed, and THIS WAS THE FIRST COURSE. boo. second course: roasted/seared sea bream (or sea bass?) on a bed of creamy leeks and mushroom compote - now, THIS was a much better and tastier way to start. i was happy, but husband wasn't the biggest fan. he had uni sashimi-style, with daikon, pea sprouts, some kind of sauce and fried GINGER. which he had requested none of. i actually think it was garlic, but the server said it was ginger. now, this was great in my opinion, being a lover of uni - BUT everything should have been eaten together, like the amuse bouche. i recommend putting a little bit of everything on your spoon and THEN taking a bite. third course: kangaroo med-rare on a sweet potato puree with eggplant caponata. so i had 4 little cubes of eggplant, woohoo. and the sweet potato was AMAZING! it was the highlight of my meal. the kangaroo was ok. not bad, but not rock-my-world good. husband had short ribs and something else. it was alright. fourth course: dessert. we got a lemon gelee with lemon and blackberry cream, and a shortbread cookie/cracker with creme and spun sugar. the desserts were.... ok. a little strong, and didn't seem to really meld the way that they were intended to. we got a frozen lollipop of something and a mini bag of tiny cookies to go at the end. these were waaaay better than the plated desserts, sadly. we had ordered 2 drinks - something from the sweet cocktails, and the moscow mule..... DANG, their cocktails are stroooong! at least you get your $$$s worth! our waiter recommended the mule to my husband (who, may I remind you, is not a huge ginger fan, as that was the ONE thing he put on his "do not like" list) - and it's made with a ginger ale/beer. anyways, they took it back, and he ordered a nice cava instead. the damage done? close to $200. DAAAAAAANG. was it worth it? no. would i go again? clearly not. yes, it's chic, yes the presentation is pretty killer. unfortunately, it just doesn't live up to the hype. please don't make the same mistake that I did! believe me, and save yourself a few pretty pennies.
