| - Fresh wonders are everywhere at this fantastic indoor/outdoor market. If you cannot find something that piques your interest here, you're walking around with your eyes closed.
Outside you'll find fresh produce. For fruits, look to Iskander, the couple that runs the stand is so sweet and helpful, and they have great fruit. On the northeast corner, don't miss the organic stand for fresh veggies and directly across, the potatoes and onions are always of top quality.
Inside is where the rest of your shopping needs are met. Meats and cheeses and breads and sausages and cheeses and pasta and baked goods... there's just too much to describe.
Tips:
* On a Saturday, go early... like before 9. The tourists tend to start showing up then, and the later in the day you wait, the more crowded the market becomes, and the worse the selection gets.
* If you can manage, go during the day on a Friday, it's much less crowded, and much more relaxed.
* Commit to going regularly. Developing a rapport with the vendors is the best way to get the best quality at the best price. Make friends (or at least acquaintances) and ask them questions, if they know you, you can get some great info and tips.
* It's worth your time to stroll around for a bit to get an idea of what and where the deals are for the week.
* Pick a small number of vendors at which to buy your staples, but don't be myopic. Occasionally different vendors run different specials. Be loyal, but if there's a price that's too good to pass up elsewhere, buy it (and only it to avoid the loss-leader) and finish up your shopping with your normal vendors.
Why not 5 stars? I am personally not a big fan of crowds. People at the market (read: tourists) can frequently be rude or oblivious, and when you're trying to get your shopping for the week done, being plowed into every 3 minutes by some oblivious hipster who's staring off into display cases rather than watching where they are going gets obnoxious. I know the place is a curiosity if you've never been, but stopping to take pictures every 10 feet is not appreciated (...yes people really do this). Also, for the love of god, if you have to bring your children, please figure out a way to navigate without the "super hummer edition" baby stroller, space is tight and no one wants to be hit, or have their foot run over. Otherwise, if you're respectful and are looking to expand your pantry with some great fresh ingredients, come join the fun!
