A few years ago Sushi Mon was one of our more highly regarded joints for AYCE. As we have since expanded our search to other local spots around town, it's taken a serious hit on the sushi meter as it just cannot compare anymore.
While their nigiri remains high in quality and freshness (albeit the portions have gotten noticeably smaller), their rolls are not particularly interesting. A great deal of the rolls contain crab stick which irks me. A lot of "crab," a lot of cucumber, a lot of tuna. Nothing different or special. They are also very dry. This negatively impacts the experience if you're not feasting on AYCE nigiri alone, as I've sometimes been tempted to do.
Our chef didn't seem too enthusiastic either. I hate sitting at the sushi bar feeling like I'm bothering he chef. I'm aware the chef-customer dynamic is different in AYCE than in traditional and authentic sushi settings, but maybe a smile when we order? Perhaps asking once or twice if we'd like anything else?
It's nice having a choice for all those late-night sushi cravings, but Sakana still wins in my book for best AYCE in Las Vegas.
