| - I have to admit that I was extremely excited to check out the pool once I learned that the Mandalay Bay was infamous for it's Mandalay Bay Beach. It boasts a shop where you can buy a bathing suit, swimming trunks, sun block, the essentials, but at a hefty price. There's an area where you can order food and drinks, beer, once again prices a bit overboard, but come on, what do you expect out here? I didn't have plans to eat or buy anything, because I was all business when I wanted to hit the faux beach. Nothing but fun and sun for me, please! Don't forget your room key, or you WILL be denied!
I was both pleased and shocked to see the number of people at the beach. It's a free-for-all when it comes to the available lounge chairs out there. If you can spare a few hundred bucks, you can live like a VIP and reserve a cabana for a day, complete with flat screen TV. Tempting, I know, but the point of hitting the pool is to get some sun and fun! Stay in your hotel room if you just want to sit around and watch TV! If you're smart and crafty like me, you'll find the slightly less crowded area between the fence and one of the towel/tube rental buildings. I first spotted the area when I was admiring the beach through the windows of the convention center, not in a creepy way of course.
Let's talk about the pools. I could hardly wait to hit the water! I'm from Florida and I miss being in the water dearly. All of you can bake in your exclusive lounge chairs, but I want to splash around poolside. I believe there were a couple of pools available for people who more or less want to relax. We traversed the Lazy River, which I more or less renamed the Not So Lazy River. Why? Because it feels like it operates at 80mph and unless you pay $20 or have the guts to snatch a tube from a little kid, the river feels more like a water racetrack! However, no complaints from me. I enjoyed myself and I DID get somewhat of a workout drifting around. Next, we ventured into the infamous Wave Pool, which I referred to as the "Unwavy Pool." You'd think one would get some decent wave action from the so-called Wave Pool, but I did not experience such thing. First of all, they had people whistling at you if you made one step over the line before the wave approaches. I did catch a few and did some pretty impressive wave-riding, but I was a little less than impressed.
There was a good mix of people, but it was also nice to see that Mandalay Beach was a family friendly place, although way too crowded for my taste. I know it doesn't seem that I was too enthralled with my experience...I mean, I AM from Florida, but I was actually quite content with my faux Beach Day. However, I would also like to add that I think it's ridiculous that all of these places close the pool way too early. The sun doesn't go down until at least 8pm, and hasn't anyone over there heard of night swimming?!?! Once again, let me remind you that I'm from Florida. Oh well, I got some sun and water fun in my system and had a great time! I did, however, miss the beachside casino, and judging from the stage, it looks like they have concerts out there.
