  • Go nuts for donuts! The donut craze shows little sign of stopping in Cleveland, and Bigmouth is the latest to join in the fray. Bigmouth Donut Co. takes over the old Cafe 55 space, and with the expanded kitchen area they manage to occupy the space better than the old tenants, while retaining the industrial warehouse feel. The parking lot in front was full, but we were able to find some free parking right on adjacent Bonna St. I went on grand opening day to check out their wares and nab some free coffee. The nice gentleman running the Phoenix Coffee stand said that Phoenix partnered with Bigmouth to create a special new coffee blend to be sold only at Bigmouth. So should you need some coffee with your carbs, know that its a Phoenix exclusive! We were afraid that they would run out of donut flavors like at some other hotly anticipated openings, but the kitchens were running full steam all morning and new batches kept coming out on the shelves. Props for staffing for a crowd! When we finally got to the front, we nabbed the Blueberry Cake, Apple Chai, and Almond Frosted Donuts. Courtesy of our friends, we also sampled a Chocolate Cake Frosted Donut. The fan favorite was the doughy Blueberry Cake, fruity but satisfying. The real blueberries on top are a plus. I also liked the Almond and Apple Chai, but the chai flavor was hard to find. We could have skipped the Chocolate Cake - it was crumbly and unimpressive, but fans of actual chocolate cake might enjoy. Not so crazy about donuts? Behind the glass were several other pastries, like mini Banana Bread loaves and Apple Fritters. Unfortunately, they're priced to discourage actual purchase. While I accept the gourmet overhead charge for these donuts ($2.75/ea), I had to raise my eyebrow at the $5 Apple Fritter. The staff were friendly without being overly giddy and I think they performed well on opening day. The tables should be adequate seating as business settles in and they announce regular business hours. And of course, it doesn't hurt to be located right next to a trendy brewery with indoor lawn games!
