  • I hadn't been to a barbershop in like 3 years or something. I needed to get my mop cut, though, because its too friggin' HOT in Arizona to walk around with a fro'. So after some searching for an African-American barbershop I came across this place. If you don't know exactly where it is, you'll pass right by it...like I did. But once you walk in, you know you're going to be well taken care of. There were like 80 barbers in there, which allowed me to walk right in and get in a chair. A fellow 'Mike' did the honors. He was great to talk to, as are most good barbers. Just as doctors have bed-side manner, barbers have, uhm, chair-side manners. My haircut was great. Not the absolute best, but nothing to be even the least bit dissatisfied about. However, I will say this. The best barber I've ever had in my hair studied the texture of my hair before he even turned on his clippers. He was making note of its thickness and how it would react to particular guard sizes. He told me that he would use a larger gaurd than he would normally because my hair is not the typical African-American grade and texture. (I'm half Filipino) That is what you call a seasoned vet, a true barber. Now Mike is no slouch, but if he had taken care to make this observation, he wouldn't have cut too much off the top like he did. HOWEVER, as a new customer to a new barber, its my responsibility to alert the barber of anything like that. So...that's my bad and in no way a knock on this guy. Mike will do you right. Of course when you step in a barbershop, you eye 3 things: the quality of the haircuts of other customers, the cleanliness of the place, and if there are folks in every available chair. The quality of what I saw getting done to others was what put me at ease as I walked in the place. Everyone was getting great work done. That leads to no empty chairs with barbers waiting. All the barbers are of quality. You know how sometimes you got your favorite barber? Well, apparently all these guys were favorites. And cleanliness? On par. Hair was swept up in a timely manner. All stations were well kept. No old styrofoam containers with left over catfish hanging around. They looked like they took pride in their shop. And no, I didn't use the bathroom:) Now for the price. I spent $30. It was $22 for the cut (including a shave). And of course I like to tip well at barbershops. Yeah, that was kinda expensive. My hair has already grown back, and its just been a week and a day....so, if I were to really try to keep myself looking clean, you're talking $120 a month just for haircuts. Granted, most people go about 2 or 3 weeks between cuts, but for me...this place is too expensive. But if you don't mind the price, are a lousy tipper, or have less need for complex cuts, this place will not disappoint. Friendly, fast, and clean. Good conversation, too. Didn't hear a lot of cursing and nonsense. Ask for Mike from Chi-Town!
