  • I haven't yet had the opportunity to eat in the actual restaurant of Tryst Cafe, but I did recently pick-up some lunch for my husband and I. For my first experience with Tryst, I normally would have given a meal of this caliber only two stars, but I'm cutting them a break since my food was to-go. My service was great, my meal was completed in a timely manner, but the food was just okay. For our lunch, we ordered the portobello sandwich with a side of black beans and the grilled cheese with french fries. The concept of each sandwich was decent, but they were both lacking in execution. I really liked the idea of putting both tomato and avocado on the grilled cheese, but there was so much cheese and avocado slathered on that the flavors overpowered the sandwich. Too much cheese always equals too much grease and that's coming from a serious cheese-lover. The portobello sandwich was average...nothing really to rave about. I do have to say that the main part of the problem with our meal may have been the fact that we took the food to-go. Everything was packaged neatly, but after a short drive to my husband's workplace, our food was mostly soggy and not quite what I would expect if it was served on a plate in the restaurant. My one suggestion would be to not place the sandwiches on top of the french fries. My fries were partially undercooked, but the grease from the grilled cheese and the condensation from the heat made for some seriously soggy fries and bread. Not good. They did put my husband's black beans in a separate container which was thoughtful; I wish they would have done the same for my fries. All in all, we didn't hate our meal, but the to-go food was not nearly as appetizing as we would have hoped. And the prices are a bit steep for the quality of the meal that we received. I would be open to trying the actual restaurant if someone suggested it, but if it were up to me, I'd rather go next door to Humble Pie.
