| - I was excited to visit this cafe, in part because it looks lovely from the outside (especially the brick) and also because it is part of the Ground Level Youth Ventures. I was, however, thoroughly disappointed.
First, I tried to order one of the "organic" teas off their board, asking for an Earl Gray, only to be told the only black tea they had was Orange Pekoe. Not impressed by the selection, and even less impressed by the fact that it tasted like cheap, mass produced tea.
The real problem, however, came about half an hour later, when I watched the staff working that day make their "homemade" soup. This consisted of several laborious steps: open industrial-sized can, pour into pot, heat. Even this was bungled, as at one point it started to boil over and smelled burnt. I'm no expert, but I don't think canned soup should qualify as "homemade." To top it off, the people sitting next to me must have ordered the soup, because at one point I watched the young staff person bring it to the table and exclaim in a cheerful voice: "here's the HOMEMADE soup," emphasizing the word "homemade." It's sad that the management would have supplied the canned soup, and perhaps even told them to lie about it.
