  • This is some seriously unique, excellent ice cream, served in a really friendly, comfortable spot. What a great place! Toronto certainly has its share of Asian-inspired dessert places, including Kekou Gelato, of which I've long been a moderate fan. I thought Wong's would be something similar - offering your HK Milk Tea's and Matcha red beans, and maybe a Durian for the adventurous. But Wong's really surprised me by offering something much, much more interesting. The flavours here are really unusual and delicious. Sesame and salted duck egg (the most popular flavour based on the SOLD OUT sign I've seen), wasabi and honey, chocolate yuzu, ube (?!) - these are not combos or flavours I've ever seen here in Canada, or even in my repeated ventures into the dessert-crazy heart of Japan and Taiwan. Wong's is honestly closer to the same level as Death in Venice Gelato in its experimentation and unique complimentary flavour combinations. And like DIV, those combinations are REALLY REALLY GOOD. It's honestly worth going out of your way for - but it's right in my neighbourhood so lucky me!! The only downside is that - like Death in Venice - you will definitely like some of the flavours more than others. I LOVED the Ube (purple yam - can't even begin to describe the flavour) and Wasabi Honey (which is not light on the wasabi - so good!!), but the sesame egg actually didn't blow my mind as it did for others, and the lime/lemongrass sorbet was too subtle for me. You can also really shoot yourself in the foot if you order two scoops - some combos do not work well together! Fortunately, the service here is EXCELLENT, meaning as soon as you walk to the counter, they are offering you to try the flavours, as many as you want. It's a smart strategy, considering how unusual the flavours are. Take advantage of it, and try it ahead of time to make sure you like it. And be conscious of combos haha The space itself is very comfortable and unpretentious. The seating is pretty limited, but there's Riverdale East park nearby, so it's not a big issue. There is also a 'store' part, which sells some pretty unique chocolates and snacks, alongside some more generic Kettle Chips and the like. Haven't tried anything yet, but may on my next visit. They also have pour over coffee, which looks pretty good... but I've been mostly focussed on the ice cream on my visits. All in all, you really owe it to yourself to check this place out, and at least try a few of the flavours. Especially the Ube! You won't regret it!
