| - When I walk down Mill Ave in Tempe I was always intrigued by the beautiful looking restaurant La Bocca. The tables spill out onto a small wrap around patio filled with beautiful looking people drinking their wine and eating delicious looking bruschetta! Needless to say I needed to give it a try.
I have been there a few times now and have a very mixed feeling about the place.
The atmosphere is great! Classy and elegant while still being relaxed. There are beautiful bench seating for larger parties and small intimate tables for the smaller groups. And the food... delicious! I'm kind of a bruschetta snob so it must be pretty good if I'm impressed by it! I think I've had a bite of each of their options but am partial to the pulled pork/pesto and the mozzarella, tomato, basil, and balsamic. All of them are filling, tasty, and beautiful looking! On my most recent trip we also tried the garlic pizza! Now I wouldn't recommend this pizza on a first date (especially if you're hoping to get a little kiss) but it was delicious! Delicious garlic, cheese, tomatoes, and herbs, but nothing was too overpowering.
One of the things I love about this place is the dinner and a show option they have with ASU Gammage. Just show your ticket and you get a free glass of wine with a purchase of an entrée. Also - once you check in 3 times a free cookie dessert!
The part that I struggle with has been the service. Now I know I've only been there a few times but each time I've been a little disappointed. While the wait staff is friendly they always seem to be running all over the place and have a few too many tables.
And here is where I have to bring the rating down to where I did...
A friend and I went to La Bocca last night before seeing a show at Gammage. I showed up about ten to 6 because I figured a rush of people would show up around 6:00 for a 7:30 show. I stood in line for a few minutes to put my name in for 2. A party of 4 behind me rushed up to the hostess and told her to put their name in at their spot in line. Once I got up to the hostess she informed me it would be a 10-15 minute wait. After 15 minutes neither my party nor the party in front of me had been seated but the party of 4 was seated because, as the hostess told a waiter - the man was driving her nuts so she just sat him. Finally just over 30 minutes later we were seated. We informed our waiter that we had a show to be at and need to leave by 7:15. So we ordered our wine and then placed our order, including our dessert (since we didn't want to be rushed...) Someone brought out our bruschetta which we enjoyed as always - and about 20 minutes later we got our pizza. When someone came to check on our pizza they then informed us that they'll put in our dessert. At about 7;10 we hadn't received our dessert and so I pulled a waiter over asking for our bill. When we hadn't received a bill by 7:15 we gave our card to another waitress and said we were in a hurry. When our bill was finally brought to us we had been charged for the wine and dessert (both which should have been free). So the staff had to void the previous transaction and bring us a new bill. So... we had to run off to our show and weren't ever able to enjoy our cookie dessert - sad face! Now that had been my worst experience there but I promise it's not usually that bad. Just thought I'd give you justification for my rating!
