| - Please adopt a pet!!!
Lied Animal Shelter is a two edged sword. First let me just say that the staff is very very nice and really wants the dogs adopted. They really want to help.
The facilities are new and beautiful and clean because they were just built in the last couple years, after a huge parvo outbreak, so they are cutting edge. They are not overcrowded at all.
This is because Lied is also the County Animal Shelter. They take in 50,000 dogs or more a year and only 15,000 are adopted. That is a 60% euthanasia rate. Again, not Lieds fault at all. But when you see all the space and openess, please understand why it is there.
If you look at the online adoption pages you will rarely see a dog there past 1 month because the euthanize as space is needed not just based on personality. Of course aggressive etc dogs go first, but then the wonderful babies go after that. Because most of these dogs do not get out to the PetSmart, PetCo, Petapalozza events, many good dogs are never seen.
I gave it a three because, through no real fault of their own, they are a kill shelter (based on space).
I would rather see a less shiny larger shelter where I know they will still take care of good pups until they find a home. Of course those shelters usually get 150 requests to take a dog a day and maybe can take 1 or 2.
So please, adopt a dog at Lied. Not because it is clean, shiny, new, but because here, without adoption these dogs will most likely be put to sleep after a month or so.
