| - I first found Moxie on Citysearch and called to set up an appointment to get my hair blown out. I have naturally curly hair that I wear straight. I can't blow out my own hair the way I like it so I need to find someplace that I like for my twice-weekly, or more, appointments.
I called and they set me up with Carlos after first telling me they were going to put me with someone else. He did a great job on my blowout and I returned again and again.
I needed my hair colored and they set me up with Emmanuelle. He was DIVINE. His color was right on and his blowouts were good, although they didn't hold as long as I would have liked. He also has this very sweet personality and a great French accent. Those are just bonuses; his color was fabulous!
I went back in to see Carlos because I was attending a black-tie event and needed my hair done especially for this. I was told he had an hour and a half to work on it so I felt comfortable as that was about when I had to leave to get ready. You have to know this if you want to see Carlos (which I really don't recommend): he would much rather do your hair HIS way than the way you like it. He turns you away from the mirror so you can't critique it as he's doing it. He didn't like the way I wore my hair and tried to convince me to do it a different way. I had to correct him more than once about it. Anyway, the day of the event he blows my hair out and starts doing these chunky curls around my face, which I liked. He told me he was going to leave them like that when I asked because he knew I'd be running my fingers through them and loosening them up anyway. I liked that so I left it that way. At the end of the styling I could tell he was getting anxious because he had clients waiting. You should also know they book back-to-back so you will not get great treatment when that happens and rush jobs look terrible, obviously. So, at the end he starts brushing through my curls that he said he was going to leave and taking all the curl out of my hair. I was now being rushed by my date to the event, rushed by Carlos because he had other clients and my hair was being ruined before my eyes. I asked him what he was doing and why he was brushing my hair. He had forgotten what he'd said about the curls. I didn't get upset, but I was in a hurry and needed him to fix the problem. He stopped what he was doing and went outside in the back. After 10 minutes of waiting I finally went and found him and told him never mind, I had to go. I had no idea he was even upset. He didn't address anything, he just ran off to the back and left me alone after telling me he's done hair for more important people than me and he knows how to fix problems. SO unprofessional. I gave him a good tip, as usual (although not deserved) and left. I wasn't rude, I didn't say anything about how bad I felt my hair looked (for $140 with tip) or anything.
I had an appointment set up for a few days later. They called and told me that they needed to set me up with a different stylist because Carlos, the hiring manager and head of stylists, lost his cool over a bad hair style and couldn't work with me. If you like overly sensitive stylists who think they know what's right for you and would like for you to be quiet and let them do it, then this is the salon for you. Granted, Emmanuelle was fantastic, but I just couldn't justify paying $80 (with tip) for a blowout from him.
This salon is nice, but you have to generally wait past your appointment time to have your hair done because their scheduling is so bad. Also, for some reason, this salon (located in Vegas, not NYC -- where I moved from -- or anything close) can make you feel like you're being looked down upon. I spend too much money on my hair to not feel appreciated for it.
Pros: Emmanuelle and his amazing color
Cons: Always have to wait, people there, for some bizarre reason, always look down on you, temper-tantrum throwing know-it-all stylists (Carlos)
