  • For our recent Vegas trip, we had Hoover Dam on our itinerary after hearing from friends about changes to area including a new visitor's center since our visit many years ago. After taking the Hoover Dam turnoff, you will stop at a security checkpoint before proceeding towards the Dam. The parking structure fee is $10 and on the ground floor, there's a restaurant and gift shop. As you proceed down the path from the structure, you will see the sign for Visitor Center and Tours. You take the escalators down to the center purchase your tour tickets for either the Dam Tour ($30 - Power Plant Tour + two extra stops in the Dam), Power Plant Tour ($15), Visitor's Center ($10). The Visitor's Center admission is included in the first two tours. We signed up for the Power Plant Tour. On a Wednesday, the line to pay was about five minutes and then another 10 minute wait to view a film about the history of the Dam. Afterwards, each group of about 25 was paired with a guide where you take the elevator down to the depths of the Dam to see the power generation turbines. You're free to take pictures. From there, you proceed back up the Dam to the Visitor's Center which has chronological displays detailing the building of the Dam. Very interesting! There's an outdoor viewing platform with a great view of the Dam, the power plant building below and the electrical towers and power lines leading up the canyon walls. Amazing views! After the leaving the Visitor's Center, we walked on the pathway that sits on top of the Dam. One side is the Dam wall and on the other side is the Colorado River. From the area you get a view of the Mike O'Callaghan - Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge which is new since I was here last. That was our next stop after the visit to the Dam. It was a great visit to one of the man-made wonders of the world, made even better with the new Visitor's Center.
