  • I love this place. Scott, the owner, is so lovely and friendly and really, really wants to talk to you about music and it's awesome. 20% discounts are given to those who "like" his Facebook page, and he often has sales during which a vinyl lover can seriously clean up. I bought a ton of NM classical music box sets during his Boxing Week 40% Off Sale - 6 record sets on Deutsche Grammophon, stuff like that - and walked away weighed down by vinyl and barely a dent in my wallet. During non-sale times, Neurotica is fairly priced. I've been happy with all of the records I've bought here and they are well-graded. As another reviewer mentioned, there are incredible deals to be found, so it's worth browsing, and Scott often brings things out of storage so there's always something new to find (however long that may take - this place is stacked to the rooftops with vinyl!). There are dollar bins outside and crates provided so one can sit while browsing. And, again, there's a lot to root through! I've barely made a dent in this place, despite having been there numerous times. I haven't even reached the jazz section. Another reviewer included Neurotica in his larger mini-essay on Why Hipsters Are Mean, but the store is not what comes to mind when I think of a "hipster establishment." I think the Eraserhead poster in Neurotica's window might've tainted that other reviewer's opinion. This is a used media store. There's no room inside for it to have a philosophy, so unless one finds stacks of used vinyl and rows of used CDs and DVDs "ironic" then, uh... I'm pretty much at a loss for why Neurotica provoked such a response. Even in terms of its customer base, Neurotica is more of a place for twitchy vinyl aficionados who are looking for a rare pressing with a misprinted label: the clientele is more Steve Buscemi in Ghost World than it is Thora Birch in Ghostworld. The owner, Scott, really makes this place. I'm happy to support his business because he is a genuinely nice guy who is honest, knows his stuff, and is pleased to help. The last time I was there, he pulled out a record I'd mentioned I was looking for a while ago. It was nice of him to both remember - just from our brief conversations about music - and set the record aside for me. A friend of mine bought an excellent Pioneer turntable from Scott for an incredible price, and Scott also gave him friendly, honest, and extensive advice on buying a tuner and accessories. I highly recommend this place!
