| - I went here after I received a gift certificate for spa services, purchased on groupon. I'd tried to look the salon up on Yelp earlier, but no reviews existed - I figured, it's a gift and who doesn't want to be pampered?
We received drinking water on entering, and were given robes to change into for our massage/body wraps. The spa was clean, well-maintained, and comfotable. I had a mineral exfoliating treatment first. My spa therapist was very sweet, but exfoliated the backs of my legs to the point of chafing pain. In addition, the spa bed was heated much beyond comfort and I eventually had to ask for something to put under my thighs so they wouldnt burn. She rolled up a towel and stuck it there and left. After she left, I practically wriggled right off the bed because of the discomfort - I've been to spas before, and this is NOT usual! Also, this was the much heralded "oasis wrap" portion of the treatment, which really didn't do much to exfoliate (other than the backs of my thighs!) or soften. And I'm a twenty-something with pretty supple, healthy skin! My mom was in the next room getting the same treatment and had to make the spa therapist turn the temperature down on the bed because it was so uncomfortable; in addition, her shower after was freezing, and when she asked if she could change the setting, the therapist was unhelpful to the point of saying "you're probably just used to warmer water, you'll get used to it".
Next, I had a facial preceded by a limited upper back massage; the facial was very pleasant, much like facials I've had in the past, and my therapist did a good job with the facial massage, but there was no steam treatment or blackhead removal, as is usual for facials.
The major problem came when we left. The man at the counter, who is presumably the owner, was beyond rude. As soon as I stepped out of the spa area, he stuck a bill in our faces and said that there was a mandatory gratuity in addition to tax! We expected some degree of tax on the gift certificate, but a mandatory gratuity is unheard of. I think most women tip generously at the salon, but this imposed (and large!) gratuity didn't make sense. Groupon certificates (which I have used before) usually say "please tip generously". When I looked confused, he was very short with me, and said "it's on the voucher, you should have read it". I said I'm sorry it was a gift so I didn't know about it - he didnt respond, and I just paid. Later, I looked at the gift certificate, which said nothing of the sort. I've told my gifter to report this to Groupon.
I don't think I"ll come here again based on the owner's attitude. Apparently he doesn't need new customers. I'd be happy to comply and spread the word.
