  • A friend and I went to Warren's Jazz Bistro on Saturday. We had heard good things from several sources about this new joint deep in the heart of Gilbert. I am thinking that maybe my standards are different than others. First the good. It has a great, diverse crowd. It's the kind of joint that I dig. The music was excellent. The house band really knows how to play, and the vocalist Jenifer Brown, is amazing. Now the bad. Since when is "Brickhouse" jazz? Though it was well played we heard no jazz...at all. It was all R&B. Now...I like R&B, but if I go to an establishment that has the word "Jazz" in it's name....I expect to hear some. Then there is the food. When I go to a place that has the word "bistro" in the name...I tend to think that some thought has been put into the food. Doesn't seem to be the case here. We got there a little after 9:00 pm and all they were serving were appetizers at that time. Which was OK. We ordered the crab cakes ($13) and chicken quesadilla ($9). The crab cakes were serviceable, though quite petite for $13. They were accompanied by a red cabbage slaw dominated by vinegar and cayenne. A LOT of cayenne...my first thought after my first bite was...Holy Smokes! Time to throttle back a little on the red powder. The chicken quesadilla was like a 8th grade home ec project gone bad. It tasted like it was comprised solely of boiled chicken and cheap cheddar in a tortilla accompanied by canned salsa. They have these new things now...they are called spices....and it's OK to use them on food. So, we were still hungry so we ordered another round of crab cakes. They came out about two minutes later and were lukewarm. We didn't even bother to send them back. We just left. Our Warren's Jazz Bistro experiment had ended. So, if you like R&B, head to Warren's Jazz Bistro, but make sure you don't go there hungry.
