  • Hiked Icebox again this morning with a diverse group: some hardcore class 4 types and some kids, seniors and casual types. Nice trip to take with a small group. Around 2/3 of way to end of Scenic Loop at Red Rock, is trailhead (birdandhike.com gives a great description as usual) Starts out rather easy as a wash with a descent into the canyon revealing different vegetation & vistas depending on time of day/year you go. Has been about a year since I've enjoyed this trail, and each time is different because of the unique beauty of Red Rock, if we've had rain (the falls and pools were moderate due to rain last month but not as most would picture when you think of waterfalls. The last fall is class 4 and for safety sake should only be attempted with ropes) we chose not to do it due to our group dynamic. Though only about 2.5 miles round trip, there is much to see with rock formations, shrubbery (and the famous giant downed Ponderosa tree) and some good scrambling for the last .25 mile or so. Those that aren't comfortable scrambling can find a way along canyon sides. At 7AM in Nov, it was quite chilly, but still dress in layers because you warm up working. Wasn't too busy early, but is popular and about 10 degrees cooler than Vegas temp. Red Rock is such a natural wonder and offers hiking/exploring opportunities really close to home. Go prepared with water, sunscreen, a hat & gloves (I prefer them for scrambling) and it can be from 1.5 to 3 hours depending on your pace. We went quickly, but stopped for a nibble and for some photo ops and were out in 2 hours. Keep in mind that if you choose to traverse the lower falls they are very slippery (have the aforementioned rope) and be mindful that your shoes/boots will be wet scrambling back up to trail. Definitely a great experience for moderate hike.
