The Banting House is my fave! Perfect aesthetics, brilliant breakfast, perfect host, brilliant location. Perfect!
I'm a boutique hotel fan with a taste for the "it" chef and anything Philippe Starck looking. After weighing my options I went with the Banting House Inn and LOVED it. The house is great and no doubt hides a history. (Did you know that Dr. Banting is the primary discoverer of insulin? I certainly didn't.) Host and recent owner Scott McCabe has done an incredible job of turning what was probably a drab and dreary stuffed to the hills B&B into a modern polished and well put together place that unveils the house's architectural features. But simply put, he has great taste and a keen eye. He's also damn good in the kitchen. I had -the- best mixed berry pancakes, coffee and toast in town. Banting House will most definitely be my homestead when next I'm in Toronto.
For those seeking practical details: it was an easy 5 minute walk to the subway and I did this on a chilly smack in the middle of winter day, an 8 minute cab ride to the opera house and all things central to that. You can even do a longer stroll south from the Banting House and get on a street car that runs along the hip and chic Queens Street West.
Other news: you're staying in an old historic and grand home that has all the modern amenities you need for a weekend trip or longer. For those on the fence about the shared bathroom there needn't be any fears here. NY's latest fashionable hotel has folks shacked up in 50 sq foot spaces with shared bathrooms down the hall and they're paying a pretty penny for it and for every other perk thereafter. (Don't believe me? Look up The Jane in NYC.) As for comfort, I loved the bed and the bedding. Everything felt good and comfortable, neat and clean. It was perfect.
Lastly, Scott McCabe is wonderful! He shared before and after pictures and frankly, what he took on was incredible. The place is fantastic! So enjoy and love the Banting House Inn for what it is and that's the perfect B&B.
If you're seeking a hotel experience...well, I hear the Hilton's friendly but it's also not interesting. Do you really want to be that person?
I don't think so.
