  • I am a Dallas native who retired and moved here to VEGAS 25 years ago at age 47. I have yet to find "REAL" BAR-B-Q, "TEX-MEX" or BURGERS here. I CAN recommend LOLA'S for genuine CAJUN food though! Anyhow, in my search for REAL bar-b-q, the reviews led me to try out ELLIS ISLAND a few days ago, even after reading that their "bar-b-q" ribs were "steamed" for 4 hours then flopped around on a grill for a few minutes (this is NOT "BAR-B-Q." by the way.). My wife and I arrived there just before 4pm Monday to beat the crowd. We signed up for the players cards to get the meal discounts and then were "greeted" by the hostess at the "bar-b-q" restaurant door who promptly told us there would be a "wait" even though there were only about 10 diners already seated in a dimly lit room that holds maybe 30. Almost immediately after telling us there "will be a waiting time", the hostess asked my 26 year old wife for her I.D. This less than attractive and unfriendly "hostess" seemed disappointed that my wife was in fact of "legal" age. I did tell my wife that this "hostess was in the wrong business." We were waited on by a nice Philippino waiter named "PHILLIP". The advertised price for the full rack rib dinner was $12 and we ordered two of them. I placed my meal discount tickets on the table and they were collected by the waiter as we ordered our meals. We got the bill and it totaled $28.00. $33 including my tip. I wondered what kind of calculator they used to add up our bill because $12 + $12 = $24 on MY calculator! Yeah, the 8.1% tax drives the bill up to $26 but where did the other $2 come from? The meal was mediocre at best which makes me wonder what planet all these rave reviewers came from. Rather than quibble we just paid the tab and left, NEVER TO RETURN! Those of you who want to experience "REAL" BAR-B-Q RIBS and are visiting the DALLAS area then drop by "SLOW BONE" on S. Irving Blvd. but be sure and get there before NOON coz the ribs are SOLD OUT by then! The hours at SLOW BONE are 11am till 3pm! They BAR-B-Q their meats "low and slow" as authentic bar-b-q is done.
