| - This is my public service announcement. The staff is friendly and this location is close to our work in the uptown area so those are some positives. Also, the closet space is large so that has been helpful for us in not having to get additional storage as we prepare to move into a house in the future.
The rest is as follows: After living here six months there have been several occasions where the fire alarms have gone off for several hours at a time during early morning, the middle of the night, and from about 8-10PM. During those times it was difficult to get ahold of management and the fire department was unable to turn off the alarms, which was a strange and helpless experience. We were told by management this was out of management's hands and would stop after each occurrence.
The building is clean although not constructed in a high quality manner, which lends to an environment where you can hear people walking above you extremely well. We have the unfortunate experience of having someone very loud living above us so we have been given the option to transfer apartments, if we are interested. The bedrooms have inexpensive carpet, which helps reduce some of the noise, but the living area of the apartment is a wood-type flooring so it sounds like an elephant stomps around on top of us daily. We do have to make an effort to walk quietly or we can hear our own foot steps, and we would die of happiness if our neighbor could be so thoughtful, but I digress. We may have been extremely unlucky in this experience, but you can hear people walking/stomping in the hallways above you on your way to the elevator as well so we have deduced the overall construction of the building is poor and does not do much to reduce transfer of noise from floor-to-floor, or unit-to-unit.
You can hear the road noise and hospital related sirens like they are in your apartment. Again, the windows of the apartment are clearly inexpensive so this doesn't provide much help. Definitely stay awhile during your tour so you can have the opportunity to hear them firsthand. We lived in a big city elsewhere so we were not unfamiliar with city noises in the past, we just had no idea that having quality building materials can go such a long way.
There isn't much of a social community here so I guess it is nice because you have quiet and privacy if you want to use the pool or work out equipment. They put on a few social events a couple times a month, but usually it is very small. There are several residents here who work across the street at the hospital so they likely enjoy this place merely because of convenience of walking to work if on-call.
When we look at other places to live the leasing agents tell us that many of our neighbors have relocated complaining of similar experiences to ours.
You should certainly do your research and find what works for you, but I would certainly see what other options are out there because this town seems to be busting at the seams with apartment complexes.
