| - I generally think of Hertz as the best of the rental car companies and if the price is even close they are the company I will go with. My experience at the Vegas airport location was horrible though and it makes me wonder if they really are any different. My flight was 90 minutes late and so it was about 1:00 am in the morning when I got in. I already had a reservation but the line to pick up my car took me an hour. That's what I expect at Dollar or Budget, not at Hertz. I guess it is my fault for not having registered as a gold member (I know it's free but really do I need to be a member of every company and give you all my information so you can spam me?) I booked my reservation so it isn't like I was getting some discount rate. To make matters worse, they were letting people who were gold members cut in front of us because the gold member station wasn't working, so it ended up taking us non-gold members even longer to get through.
I finally got through at the desk and was told that I could take any car in the gold section. It was 2 in the morning and I was tired so we quickly picked the blue Nissan Rogue because it had a bit of clearance and I knew we would be going on a couple of dirt roads. Car was knew and in great condition. Only thing is, I didn't realize that the car actually didn't have permanent license plates on it. My fault for not seeing this, but it made complicated when I was giving our vehicle description at hotels and campgrounds. Even worse, the 30 day window that you can drive it on the temporary plates actually expired before we were to return the car. But of course, but the time I realized that I was way out of town and not about to go back. So, I basically drove an unregistered car for a week (which I admit I was a little nervous about and probably kept me from speeding).
Anyway, the tags was my fault, but the line was horrible. It seems that Hertz has basically become like dollar and budget. You only get decent service if you sign up for the gold service. Everyone else, you just have to wait. I definitely would not pay more to go with Hertz again.
