  • Knocked my socks off. Made me proud to be a Pittsburgher (albeit a transplanted one).Not one, two, but three encores should tell you how extraordinary this concert was. I was truly privileged to be there. I couldn't decide who was more impassioned about the music (especially the Rachmaninoff), esteemed, highly regarded Maestro Honeck, conductor, or the incredibly talented Mr. Daniil Trifonov, pianist. Truly, though, the night belonged to Mr. Trifonov, who seemed genuinely exhilarated and humbled simultaneously. From the moment Mr. Trifonov stepped on stage, you could feel his energy and enthusiasm. When he started playing, you could see and feel his passion. He, like Maestro Honeck, took command, mesmerizing the audience . The Berlin, Germany concert was the PSO's third of their European tour. They opened with Beethoven's Overture to Coriolan, Opus 62, followed by Rachmaninoff's Concerto No. 2 in C minor for piano and Orchestra, Opus 18 (I. Moderato, II.Adagio sostenuto, III. Allegro scherzondo (Mr. Trifonov). Thunderous appause showed the audience's true appreciation and amazement at this gifted, young pianist's talent. A pleasant 15 minute interrmission gave me the chance to admire the courtyard (from inside, as there were smokers RIGHT outside the door, because of the downpour). The (formal part of the) concert concluded with Tchaikovsky, Symphony No.6 in B minor, Opus 74, "Pathetique" (I. Adagio-Allegro non troppo, II. Allegro con grazia, III. Allegro molto vivace, IV. Finale: Adagio lamentoso). Three encores, the last being a spirited Gallop, followed, with a commentary by Mr. Cunningham (WQED), giving the audience some backstories and amusing anecdotes.
