I rented a car from Advantage Rental Car @ Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport on my recent trip to Arizona July 26, 2017. The initial cost for my rental on line for a Toyota Camry was $204.47 for 7 days rental. Then you add the taxes which I was warned by a friend that has a place in Phoenix that they are much higher based on their location in the airport. Unfortunately I already booked my return flight which couldn't be changed & was non refundable. The local car rental spots close at 6 pm so I was sort of locked in to the airport location which is open 24 hours.
So I arrived at the airport was taken to the airport car rental location by shuttle to pick up my car and there were about 17 or 18 people inline in front of me and only 2 agents initially. 2 more agents came out and the line moved pretty quickly. When I arrived to pick up my rental car and speaking to the rental agent he asked where we were going in Arizona. When we told him we were going north to Flagstaff, Horseshoe Bend, Page, The Grand Canyon and Sedona he suggested that we upgrade and rent a car with a larger engine and more capacity and horsepower. He informed us that we were headed to some mountainous areas. The fact that it's so hot in Arizona and you need an air conditioner he felt that the Camry's 4 cylinder would struggle both running the AC and going up the hills. Even though I was reluctant to upgrade it was good advice to get a little more power & acceleration because a 4 cylinder would have definitely been taxed and over worked with the AC running and going up the mountainous terrain. I ended up getting a Toyota Avalon. The Avalon has plenty of power for climbing, & accelerating w/the AC on or so you would think. I had problems later with the car
He then informed me that Arizona has a state law that holds the renter responsible if you should have an accident and the car isn't rentable that you would have to pay the rental for the time that the car was in the shop being repaired. So if the car was in the shop for 2 weeks you would have to pay for the rental for that period.
I informed him my insurance would cover the repairs in the event of an accident, but he told me that it was required even though I showed him my insurance card. JUST A WORD OF CAUTION CALL YOUR INSURANCE
COMPANY AND VERIFY WHAT THEY COVER. As it turns out my insurance company does cover the repair rental, but it's better to check to make sure. I should have checked the specifics of my coverage and By the time it was said and done my $204.47 for 7 days for the Car Rental w/the insurance added @ $25.99/day x 7 = $181.93 + airport taxes of $173.78. The total came out to $560.18
As it turns out my insurance company covers the down time that the car is out of commission for repairs and so does my Costco Citi card so I already had double coverage. (Even though I never needed it). So I will get the $181.93 plus a prorated amount of the tax credited back probably in the $240 range.
One other problem I had 5 days into the trip and 3 hrs from Phoenix the car maintenance light goes on. I was at about 1 hr north of Sedona. I called Advantage to see if they had a location where I could possibly exchange the car. They told me I had to come back to Phoenix to exchange it. Are you kidding 3 hours back to Phoenix and 3 hour back to where we were to exchange the car. What a Mickey Mouse operation you have to go back to The Phoenix airport to exchange the car. Never Again
