| - So, so, so good! Wow.. I didn't really know what to expect when I visited on 3/17/16 for dinner. Well, I read reviews but I just didn't expect to walk away so satisfied.
It is true that walking into this place is like stepping back in time. The staff wears outdated uniforms and the decor is old fashioned. It sounds tacky, but it's actually a really nice experience. Our waitress was super sweet and attentive.
They start you out with sourdough - warm and delicious, served with butter. We then had the prime rib dinner; I had the English Cut (three thinner slices - $42) and my boyfriend had the Lawry Cut (one large slice - $44). The prime rib comes with mashed potatoes and gravy, Yorkshire Pudding (an eggy bread), horseradish prepared 2 ways (regular and whipped), and a salad prepared table side by your server. The salad comes first and I thought it was okay. Their "Vintage Dressing" tastes like Thousand Island and it was my least liked part of the meal but I still thought it was a unique addition to the dinner experience. When you're done with your salad, the cart carrying the prime rib heads to your table. You tell the carver who is assisted by your server which cut you want and the doneness you prefer. I asked for medium-well and my boyfriend asked for medium rare. What I got was well done and what my boyfriend got was pretty close to what he wanted, though a little more on the rare side. But please note, still no complaints from us. It was DELICIOUS!!! We ate every last bite of prime rib and mashed potatoes on our plates. We weren't huge fans of the Yorkshire Pudding, which you are supposed to use to sop up all the juice on your plate. That's okay because I had no room for more bread after the prime rib. Oh - the best part of the meal for me - was the bearnaise! I know it's not traditional to order bearnaise with prime rib but I try this sauce everywhere I go. It's because no one knows how to make the perfect bearnaise. But Lawry's does! It has the bite that is missing in most bearnaises I've had. I ate it along with my prime rib and I recommend this combo :)
I also had a martini with olives that were stuffed with steak and potatoes. This was okay.. but I forgot to order it dirty, so I didn't enjoy it as much as I usually would. The stuffed olives weren't my favorite. My boyfriend had a regular Jack & Coke which he enjoyed.
One thing I didn't like is when the cart comes around, the server asks you "would you like creamed corn or creamed spinach?" not indicating that it isn't included in the price of the meal. They phrase this question in a way that makes it sound like you have a choice between those two sides. I find this deceiving way of upselling prevalent at fancy restaurants and I'm not a fan. I knew better because I had studied the menu beforehand. And thank goodness we didn't add a side, there is PLENTY of food included with the prime rib dinner.
All in all, what a great experience. It was expensive - $120 before tip - but I really enjoyed dinner as did my boyfriend. It's the best prime rib I've had anywhere. There's a 5th generation cattleman (or something like that) on here giving them a one star review. That is just terrible, this place does not deserve such a bad review. I'd like to know what place in town he goes to for prime rib because it must be amazing.
Give this place a try, we will definitely be back!
