| - I am a Chicago Guy,
Born there, raised there. Lived there over 30,years.
So when I heard that Al's Beef of Chicago had reopened here in Scottsdale, I went back to remembering the Al's in Chicago. Thin sliced well seasoned, juicy, italian beef on a crispy Italian roll with sweet peppers.
I had also heard that this place had closed because of problems and was under new management ,so I had my doubts, but it was early Saturday afternoon and why not give it a try.
Being a very particular ex-Chicagoan, I wrote down exactly what I had always ordered in an Italian beef from the Al's in Chicago, on crispy bread, wet, loaded with sweet peppers, cut in half with a side of fries... and asked my wife to pick it up while she was running errands,
When she got there, I asked her to call me back so that I could talk to the order person and make sure they understood my writing and got it right.
I talked with the person there and what came home wasn't even close.
The beef was tough and dry, the roll not at all crispy and soaked to pieces and there were no peppers on it at all. They even managed not to bother to cut in half.
When I complained to the manager, Barry, he offered to make it over or take care of us next time, but why would we bother. There were fewer that 6 people in the restaurant when they screwed it up the first time, So my wife went back for a refund and Barry had the audacity to ask us to pay for the fries!
My advice to anyone look for real, well prepared Chicago food. Stay away from this pretender and go to Spinaatos.
