| - I have stayed at this Delta over the years (as is was previously called The Delta Bow Valley). The location is excellent, as the proximity to most of the downtown businesses as well as several amenities in the area.
Recently I've stayed and albeit the hotel is under a major construction project. There are several things I've not overly impressed about.
Being a Marriott Platinum member, I was informed at check-in, that I had been "upgraded". Upon arriving at the room the room was a standard room, and I'm not sure what was 'upgraded' about it ? The construction project has almost the entire lobby of the hotel boarded off. There is a narrow passage way for the check-in area. The front desk is very confined and queuing up seems to be the norm. When I checked in the front desk staff were pleasant enough, but not exceptionally welcoming.
As mentioned previously, the room was a standard sized room. The room seems pretty tired. Dark carpeting, bathroom fixtures that are past their due date for use, ineffective lighting. The desk area has the TV, some glasses & ice bucket, a lamp, and the hotel propaganda. With only ONE electrical outlet from the lamp. No USB charge points. The bedside clock-radio and lamp... no plug or USB charge points. Way in the corner, behind the small table with the coffee maker was the only electrical plug available outside the bathroom.
The bed was comfortable enough, however the windows seemed very thin. Sound from the street below easily came through. The windows will open slightly, and even with them closed, it was fairly noisy. I was fortunate to be on a high floor so some of the noise was further away, but was still very noticeable.
The Executive lounge during the renovation (on the second floor) looks like a room that used to be part of the restaurant, it's small with a cobbled together arrangement of tables to have food and drinks placed. No windows or view of anything from this lounge.
During the construction the gym is closed. There is no mention of construction on website. No mention of the gym being closed. I heard (not from the staff - but from others that stayed there) you can use the gym at the Marriott hotel a few blocks away in the interim.
Also with the construction there seems to be dust everywhere. The majority of the construction is on the top 5 floors (21-26) and yet on the 18th floor elevator lobby, there was enough dust for someone to write "Hi" in the dust on the top of the trash container. What's worse that wasn't removed the entire week I stayed there.
Lastly the wifi. While there are actually cat 5 connection points on the desk, this doesn't do me any good as my laptop no longer has a cat 5 (RJ45) connection. Wifi is at best slow (think home DSL speeds from 10 yrs ago). During peak times (8.30-10.00p), it's not worth the frustration. Basically it's a brownout !
Overall, I've stayed at this hotel many times over the year. They have been a solid choice. Right now, I am really not impressed with the construction, as well as all the other items mentioned. For what is being charged for room rates, it's not worth it. I'll be looking for some other place to stay. Maybe once the construction is done, this might be an option.
