  • I'm truly outraged. I was a victim of a red light runner on 4-25-16 at approx 2:20PM on Granite Reef & Chaparral, but I was cited for failing to yield in an intersection while making a left. I was on my way to my son's school & traveling eastbound on Chaparral. There are three lanes on either side of Chaparral (two standard passing lanes & one left turn lane) at this intersection. I pulled into the west left turn lane to go north onto Granite Reef & caught the yellow light so I slowed & came to a complete stop as it turned red. I was the first car in the left lane. I watched the construction workers & a police officer ahead of me (they were on the northeast side of the road). An older gentleman who was/is a construction worker, was walking north in the east crosswalk up to the site being worked on. He caught my eye because he seemed to walk so slow that I had the thought that he would still be in the crosswalk when the east/west traffic lights turned green. Luckily he made it. The cop looked at him & then looked about at the traffic & the workers. He really didn't seem to do much as he wasn't directing traffic. He just stood there...his purpose at the scene still boggles me. On the northeast side of the road, the far right lane was closed due to the construction reducing drivers to one lane of flowing traffic & the east left turn lane to go south on GR. East/west lights turned green, so I pulled a bit into the crosswalk. This intersection is tight like a residential intersection, so you cannot pull into the intersection fully. I didn't completely block the crosswalk at first. There was a car ahead of me in the east left turn lane to go south onto Granite Reef. Cars were flowing through the light giving me no opportunity to turn, so I patiently waited. The east/west traffic lights turned yellow, so I now inched a bit into the intersection and blocking the west crosswalk. A white car traveling west ran through the yellow after it had already changed. While s/he was passing me, the east/west lights turned red & I looked at the driver side window of that white vehicle & blurted some obscenities at the driver cursing them for taking the opportunity to run the light. The east/west lights were now a solid red on both sides after the white car passed (there are no traffic arrows at this intersection). I'm in the intersection! I looked ahead & saw the black Honda CRV which was a good 5 ft or so back from the east crosswalk. With my light being solid red, the CRV being that far back & appearing to slow, I'm now obstructing both north & southbound traffic as their lights were now green. So I make my turn going about 7-10mph when the CRV slams dead center into my passenger side door. I hopped out of my vehicle & shouted to the construction workers on the northwest side "Did you see what happened?!? That person ran a red light! Did you see it!?" Each one said, "No." Then the officer from across the way came up to me & asked if I was ok & if I could move my car. I said yes to both & asked if he'd seen what happened & said that the car ran the red light to which he responded, "No." I was shocked & shaken at this point. I had no way to see out my passenger window, but I managed to move my car (now facing the southbound traffic on Granite Reef) with NO help into a parking lot on Granite Reef (northwest). The cop walked over & said that Scottsdale police were called & are on their way. I waited by my car because I had my dog with me in my backseat. We are both uninjured. I learned the other driver is uninjured while speaking to her insurance rep, but my adjuster said she's now claiming an injury! A female cop showed & asked me what happened. I gave as much detail as possible at the time. She was disinterested in what I was saying. She gave me the standard papers to complete & another cop showed to question the other driver. Allegedly there were NO witnesses even though there were tons of drivers & workers about including the cop. I asked the female cop if I could speak to the other driver to see if she was ok & she told me "It's not recommended", so I refrained. During this I was coordinating pickup for myself, my dog & my kiddos. After all of the paperwork was completed & I transferred my belongings to another vehicle, the female cop handed me the citation. I was dumbfounded. I proclaimed my innocence & said, "But the light was red...she ran the light. How could I have been more safe or 'yielded' any more?!" The cop didn't answer me. I'm apparently at fault. As it turns out the other driver was not cited for running the light & in fact claimed to the insurance companies (& probably the police) that she had the green. The cop on site for the construction workers did not stop other drivers for questioning. The other two cops seemed to want to breeze through the matter. They did nothing to bring true justice. A freeloader, Alexandra, is now taking advantage. She was going over 40mph in a construction zone! THX SPD
