The Escalante Center serves more than just seniors. My grandson attended preschool/pre-Kindergarden here through the City of Tempe's park and recreation department for the total fee of just $80 for each 16 week semester. In addition to caring teachers, there are interns from ASU's early childhood development BS program assisting in each class. It is an awesome program serving a wide cross-section of Tempe residents.
The Escalante Center also hosts Tempe's food bank. A much needed service in these difficult economic times. There is also a full-service swimming pool, a small park with covered ramadas and picnic tables, a terrific gymnasium, a fitness room, and a host of community services here. The facility is well-worn, but clean and the landscaping is well-tended.
I lived in Tempe for years before I became aware of this center because it is about a block west of Price RD (the 101 fwy) and not visible from the main road. However, this Center is a real Tempe gem and an important resource for East Tempe.
