| - I have been wanting to try Tryst Cafe for some time now...ever since reading about it in Phoenix Magazine. We called ahead to make reservations and while the hostess was extremely polite, she asked if we had a "Travel Zoo" coupon. Well, I couldn't understand what she had said because she talked so fast but that was fine...I didn't have a coupon. So, we get to the restaurant and we are sat outside immediately. We looked over the menu awaiting our waitress and were impressed with the variety of options, especially the GF options. We wanted to look at the drink menu but weren't given any so we just had to await the waitress. Well, about 10 minutes later, the waitress, who had been at all of the other tables, came over asking if we had a "Travel Zoo" coupon. Again, she said it so fast, I had no idea why they were so interested if we had a coupon; she did explain that the coupon apparently expired that night so they wanted to see if I had one. Ok, she asked if we wanted a drink because it was before 7:00 and happy hour was still on. Since we didn't have a drink menu, she got us one.
I ordered the Sangria (hh price $5 she said); my husband ordered a Apple Cider drink ($2 off normal price she said). Drinks came out and while very good, my husband's glass was covered in dry food - obviously not clean so he asked for another drink. It came out about 5 minutes later and the waitress made it clear that the dirty glass wasn't her fault...the bartender's fault. This drink was watered down so it seemed reasonable to assume that they might have simply poured his drink into a clean glass. At that point, we weren't feeling too great about our restaurant pick but we pushed on.
Food comes out and it looks delicious. The food was very good and I enjoyed the meal as did my husband; however, his meal was dripping grease (burger) and was difficult to put down once he started eating it. He certainly had to wash his hands after finishing because he was drenched in grease. Unfortunately, he felt quite ill after and into the evening. I don't think there was anything necessarily wrong with the meal, but the amount of grease was simply overwhelming.
We got our bill and our hh drinks that were supposed to be on discount, weren't; in fact, my Sangria was more expensive than the menu quoted. We watched what appeared to be a manager walking around asking customers about their meals so we anticipated him asking us as well but that never happened. I wonder if he could tell we didn't like it and didn't feel like hearing about it. I wonder if he'll hear about it now that I've taken 10 minutes to type out my experience. We didn't mention the incorrect prices because we just wanted to leave.
So, I'm left with...the food was decent; drinks not so much, service fine but nothing spectacular...will absolutely not go back and will make sure that others know what to expect if they decide to go.
