| - I live in the neighborhood and walk by Italian Restaurant pretty much every day on my way to my yoga class. I first tried it shortly after it opened and found it OK. In those days they served wine in regular glasses, the way they would in simple eateries in Italy, and I thought it added an air of authenticity to the restaurant. The pasta dish I had that time was good, although not outstanding, but it tasted fresh and uncomplicated. The flourless chocolate cake and cappuccino were a disappointment, but overall I thought it was worth visiting again. After all, it's right in my neighborhood, and the ambiance is very nice.
I made my second visit this evening. The first change I noticed was the wine was now served in wine glasses. Unfortunately, the elegant glass had taken all character out of the house wine, which tasted watery and flat. I was trying to decide between pasta with eggplant ragu and pasta bolognese. When i asked the waiter for advice, he recommended to go with bolognese, and so I did. Beef was the overwhelming ingredient in this dish, and it was very heavy and extremely salty. In fact, all I could taste was salt. I couldn't figure out what kind of pasta was used in the dish. I thought the menu said farfalle, but what I got on my plate were very wide and thick ribbons of pasta. When I finally managed to extract some from under the heavy beef sauce, it tasted very al dente, heavy... and tasteless. I went through about two-thirds of the dish - I was hungry - bur couldn't detect any taste other than salt.
And yes, I got the weird crostini at the start of my meal and was unimpressed to say the least. I had come in fully expecting a nice meal and left totally disappointed and still hungry. A place called Italian Restaurant that can't prepare a decent pasta? We are fortunate in this neighborhood to have many good restaurants within a few blocks, and Italian Restaurant just doesn't measure up, not to mention being too pricey for what it serves. So I'll continue walking by on my way to my yoga class, but I have no plans to ever stop in again.
