| - If you're as price conscious as I am, you might want to get a second or third opinion before agreeing to service here or anywhere for that matter. I went to Sun Devil Auto after already taking my car into Kelly's Automotive. For the AC repair I needed, Kelly's quoted me $689, which seemed high to me. I went to Sun Devil auto for a second opinion and received the exact same diagnosis as Kelly's (which was nice, looks like the diagnosis must be accurate) expect the Sun Devil quote was over $900.
Also, Kelly's was pretty adamant that in addition to this AC repair, I needed new tires. Sun Devil didn't mention the tires, but they did mention that I needed to replace the struts. Struts, according to Sun Devil, need to be replaced every 50,000 miles (at an expense of over $700). Everyone on this planet has probably driven cars with over 100,000 miles on them (I've had cars with 200,000) and I have never replaced a strut. I've never been told that a strut needs replacing. How does a part that needs to be replaced at 50,000 last over 200,000? My guess is....Sun Devil likes to sell struts, so I need struts. Kelly's likes to sell tires....so I need tires. The car wash I go to tells me I need to change my oil every 3,000 miles, the manual says its 7,500. What is this? Is auto repair basically a scam industry as a whole?
Why is it so hard to find honest mechanics? Their labor costs are like lawyers...a 10 minute job is an hour of labor. An hour job is a day of labor. Everything MUST be replaced well before it actually needs to be replaced. What should we believe?
I guess I'll continue to practice my YouTube mechanic Skills. The $540 leaking heater hose assembly I needed to replace (quote from Kelly's) was a $30 part, with about 3 hours of labor from someone who barley knows the difference between metric and standard wrenches. I figured it out and saved over $500.
The AC Compressor I was quoted $900 to replace is a $250 part if ordered online. Thankfully, YouTube is there to teach me how to install this thing, because I can't see paying $750 to remove a compressor and install a new one with $20 worth of refrigerant.
BTW, the guys at Sun Devil we're certainly friendly, customer service seemed solid. This is really just a post to encourage everyone to shop around a little if you can - these guys are clearly expensive. While they're all likely scamming us in some way, I think that's just the nature of the beast and no reflection on Sun Devil directly. They're doing what they gotta do - convince you to hand over as much money as possible. (financing available)
