  • Anal Retentive HOA. HOA's have their place and they do keep a neighborhood looking good. But some like this one go overboard with violations. I've owned property in this HOA for a year now and I get nearly one violation a month on a postage stamp front and side yard. For example a few months ago I got cited for weeds after the rains here in Vegas. It arrived just a week or so after the rains. I promptly cleaned them up and then a few months later I got cited for (no kidding) three weeds under a window on the side of the house away from the road and behind a wall! Then I got a summons to their kangaroo court for the three weed violation. I complained and they admitted it was a mistake and cancelled my summons. Just in the last month I was cited for a minimal amount of leaf litter near the front porch which I had just cleaned up. Then I got cited for "suckers" on the tree in front which I promptly trimmed making the tree look pretty denuded. Then a few weeks later the same tree was cited for covering the stop sign on the corner. Apparently the HOA watchdog needs glasses since the tree had been there for years covering the stop sign and he or she missed both the suckers, leaf litter, and branches at one go prompting three violations in an area covering half the front "yard." This is a Terror Worst HOA which is always one of the worst and I own a lot of property in Vegas and it's up there with the worst. Other standard complaints is they only mail violations and give you 25 days to comply. Some people in this town have some money and time to travel and are not always hanging out by their mail boxes looking for violations. A simple solution would be a polite email before all the legal mumbo jumbo in a formal violation. But of course they never will send a simple email. It's not surprising that you can respond by Fax or email for THEIR convenience. Often Terror Worst will cite many houses in the same neighborhood for something like painting shutters. As you would expect they never help you with this by suggesting a contractor who would fix the problem at minimal expense. You're always on your own. Another HOA will do this with helpful suggestions. So by now as you might guess, the tree in my front yard barely exists and looks awful due to HOA compliance.
