| - 2017 Update - Peter at Sanigans sent me a kind note (2015, sorry took me two years to catch that) and there are supply chain cost issues and overall rising beef producer prices that have impacted prices of some 'lesser' cuts to maintain overall operational affordability.
^
In other word it's not as if they wouldn't like to keep some of the good deals they used to. But they also can't lose money. Things would have to be different. We do know beef producer selling prices dipped this past year (it was in the news) and despite predictions of a gradual adjustment our retail prices never reflected this. Perhaps gun shy from recent years of losses retailers were holding firm and enjoying the added margin. In fact now we're already hearing in the news about more beef price hikes to come, and the sticker shock can't be good for sales volumes...
2014 UPDATE * Meh, bavette steak (lower sirloin flap) prices are now THREE times what they were a few years ago. That's another 50% increase in the last month. You guys want to tell me that's 'increasing costs', LOL I will now forever hear that blather as 'we just really like money.'
* EARLIER RECENT REVIEW - Prices now out of control, charging double for Bavette compared to a few years ago. It's an off cut, requiring some careful work to cook and to chew, it's not two-thirds of the way to a T-bone. It's a little off-putting.
Quality is usually at least good, very few real problems. Prime prices but not all prime cuts on the classic steaks. I often wonder what to even buy, and walk out with little or nothing whereas I used to go in and buy more than I had intended to. It's like they've lost focus on the customer and everything that made them cool. Or , as others suggest, maybe they've just stopped worrying about the best selection and quality to meet raging demand and an fortunate indifference to over-pricing?
I guess when Kensington businesses like this 'smell the Yup money' and grab for the Golden Ring, complete area gentrification cannot be far behind. I'll fondly miss the Sanigans I knew even a few short years back. I look forward to more Queen West-ish banality.
