| - A little challenging to find, but good location, at 71st drive, just North of Bell. Turn north on 73rd and wind your way through the complex to find Crossfit ArchAngel. I tried out this location as a go-to Box for when I am in the Valley - which is fairly often.
I showed up for a 5am class, introduced myself to the guy writing on the board, figuring he had to be the instructor, Jared. Very nice and friendly. He gave me good pointers during the workout and checked-in with everyone during the lifting and WOD pieces. I didn't know what workout I would walk into, as the schedule is not posted online, only class times, next to the contact box. WOD, Lifting, Foundations, etc. - I had no idea, but I wanted to workout.
I hit the restroom before getting started. Oy - try not to use the restroom. It's gross. I didn't see any other facilities either; only one bathroom for everyone's use. No shower - only a small room by the front door with unsecured cubbies to leave your stuff. So leave your purse in the car if leaving valuables makes you nervous. (like your wedding ring while lifting) Don't expect to change in there. It's not private. Come dressed to sweat. I wouldn't change in the bathroom but it is a private space if needed.
Very large space, with a large selection of equipment, but the floor hadn't been cleaned in a long time (along with the bathroom). I wasn't looking forward to the burpee schedule and having my face in that mess. Jared started the warm up right on time, while people were still trickling in. The warm up is more stretching movements than working up breath and heart rate. Which I didn't mind. We got a verbal walk through on workout, he set the clock and we were on our own to complete the weight piece. A little different than what I am used to, but fine none the less. Though there were a few people there, everyone was doing their own thing on the clock. Not encouraging each other or working as a unit. I'm not judging, it was just the way it was.
Next section was the cardio piece. Jared said that the 5am classes are the guinea pigs for the day's WOD and ended having to change the EMOM to every two minutes, in the middle of the workout, because even the super fit people couldn't keep up. It screwed people up but I just wanted to workout, not worried about tracking.
The strangest part of this visit was that most people seemed to know each other. There was one other gal that also didn't know Jared (I asked her his name, and she shrugged that she didn't know) so I don't think she was a regular but none of the regulars even acknowledged me or her. They were cheery and chatty, but completely acted like we weren't there. I introduced myself when forced to pair up for the workout - only then did I get someone's name and eye contact. Friendly enough when confronted but pretty clicky, which is annoying. I bought a tank top before leaving and scooted to catch my 10am flight.
This Box is A-Ok, if you know what you are walking into; such as, which class, are there facilities to change clothes, etc. So now you know. I will go back next time I am in the Valley. I like the location and the size. I'll make sure to be better prepared.
