| - They are open from 5am. I know I was there at 4:58am on Sunday. Pima Canyon Access is a part of South Mountain, maintained by the City of Phoenix. I was meeting my friend here at 5am for early hour hiking and when I arrived, I waited two minutes when a truck with City of Phoenix logo showed up right at 5am. I was at 12th car to enter the parking area. While I was waiting for my friend, a parking lot became about 80% full. (I waited for 15 mins). When we came back to the parking lot after a few hours of hiking, parking was completely full, in fact cars are parked on the street all the way to the main street.
Pima Canyon is perfect for everyone, multi-use trails of various length and difficulty for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. They have ramadas for picnic, and relatively clean bathroom.
I came for hiking and thought it was okay. I suppose if I wanted to continue I could make it more challenging but for the amount of time I was there, it was just a nice stroll at the park. I thought some of the trails were just right for trail running. I saw many bikers, from professional looking to beginners (in fact some of them were wearing regular shorts). All the people I encountered was very nice, polite and courteous, yield for each other as passing by.
Next time I would come back with a mountain bike. They looked really fun.
