  • UPDATE: I took the cat back to the shelter and the situation was rectified. He was bathed and treated with Revolution, and explanations for things I had mentioned in this review were given. The smell, for instance, was likely caused by un-neutered males spraying/urinating, and I realized later that day that even the recently neutered (his surgery was 2/7 and it is now 2/13) male cat I adopted has extremely odorous pee which I read should normalize once his hormones do. I noticed that someone responded to this review with everything I was told in person, in case anyone is interested. They also gave me more antibiotics because he was still exhibiting symptoms for an upper respiratory infection when I adopted him. I really was not expecting them to give me more antibiotics and didn't believe they had to; when I adopted him I left the shelter recognizing that the management of his URI was my responsibility. I am very grateful. I adopted a cat here that turned out to have fleas. It was noted on his paperwork that he was examined by a vet who wrote that there was a lot of flea dirt on his abdomen and that he needed to be treated. I saw the flea dirt when I got him home but assumed he was treated and just needed a good bath to remove all the residual stuff. I began brushing him out and found 3 live fleas. I called Halo and they told me there was no flea treatment on record for him. Luckily I was told I could take him back for treatment because it was indeed in their system that whoever examined him noted the flea problem, so they were aware of it and should have taken care of it before he was adopted out. I don't know if him coming home with me was a result of poor organization or what, but this has been really stressful. If it hadn't been noted anywhere in their system that he had fleas, I wouldn't have been able to take him back to have him medicated, even though I noticed the fleas less than 24 hours after having him in my home. The contract they have you sign keeps them from being liable legally. I'm taking him in soon today, so I'll update my review. I'm also treating my carpets with an IGR and low pressure spray tank I ordered online (it's something called precor concentrate). He also has an upper respiratory infection, which I was already made aware of, and that's fine. I was given some medicine to give him and if it doesn't clear up as it should I'm getting him to my vet. I gave him his last dose of antibiotic last night but he's still sneezing which is worrying. This was what I agreed upon when I took him in; treating that infection is up to me and my vet now. I did NOT sign up for fleas. NOPE. I would also like to note that the adoption center stinks to high heaven and seems too full. I'd attribute all the instances of people taking home sick animals to the lack of space and manpower over there. I get the feeling that they might be underfunded. I really don't know. The little enclosures where the cats are kept should really be cleaned more often than they are but it's probably difficult to do that when you have limited space and so many felines. Just don't adopt here if you want a smooth, worry-free experience. I'm glad I got this cat out of there. He's a sweetheart. But Jesus...
