  • I visited Archery District for a friend's birthday. The whole concept was new to me. I found the experience fun, but I felt the establishment could have taken the concept further. There is still a lot of room for them to grow. The games are basically archery + dodgeball. Games are set up to be very active with lots of shooting. However, since archery takes more skill than throwing or firing (a paintball gun), I felt like players could add in more strategy into the game to take advantage of the arrow limits, safe zones and hiding spots. That being said, if anyone is expecting to go to Archery District and expect it to be like paintball -- it is not. This business is not set up this way, and I really wish it was. The play area is kind of small, more like the size of a school gymnasium. I would have loved if the business was more creative with the games, and how they encorporated the array of movements and archery concepts. It would be great if there were game package options such as... the hunting package, capture the flag/dodgeball game style packages, target practice package, war games package. (PS. Please A.D. feel free to use these ideas. I will not charge you a consultation fee ;D) In addition to the above, the service was not that friendly and organized. Our game host seemed to just be going through the motions, but really didn't want to be there. That being said, the facility is pretty nice and new. More details about how the games work. 30 min before your game time (1h slots), you can do target practice to learn how to shoot. Two shots each. The most important thing to remember is to bend the arm that is holding the bow. Otherwise, you will get a nasty bruise as most of our group (and I learned). Forearm gaurds can be provided, but at $3-5 each. I understand that the business may want to make a little extra money, but I really feel like the arm gaurds should be included... it's a pretty basic essential. Getting hit doesn't hurt that much unless you are hit in a sensitive area. I got hit multiple times, a couple times at a fairly close range, and I have no bruises whatsoever (except from the bow string!). I have been paintballing before, and that definitely hurts a lot more. GAMES 1) Hit all 5 targets or all players on the opposing team to win. 2) Medic. One team member loses their bow and gains two shields. The medic travels around the field healing by touching them for 5 seconds. "Injured" teammates cannot travel to the medic, only vice versa. A team wins by shooting the medic or getting all other opposing players out. 3) Kings court (my favourite and longest/tiring of all the games). Players who are hit join the other team. The game ends when all players are playing on the "winning" team and no players are left on the other side. 4) Players who are hit stand at the back wall behind the other team. If they catch an arrow they go back in the game. A team wins when all players on the other team are out. Speed of getting other players out is important in this game. (Catching arrows is easier than it seems. At least for me) 5) Birthday run. Our birthday girl ran from one side of the court to the other as EVERY PLAYER shot at her. So fun. :) ...at least I thought so. She may have a different opinion. ;) Luckily for her, our group didn't have very good aim. Overall, for $25/person this is an expensive game to play more than once in your life. Good for active parties. Great for kids! I would still recommend friends to try it, but I could see a future competitor doing this concept way better.
