  • After Christmas, my boyfriend and I visit my snowbird parents in Scottsdale for a few days. Last year we stayed at the Hyatt House on Drinkwater, which was a fine hotel but did not merit us staying there again. This year we tried the DoubleTree at the intersection of N Scottdale Rd and Jackrabbit. We enjoyed our stay and plan to stay here again next post-Christmas. The best part of the hotel was the room: spacious, comfy king-sized bed, and a lovely patio with a view of one of the two pools. The room aesthetics were on point, especially the wood-rafter ceiling and two leather sitting chairs. The bathroom was not too big and not too small, and the water pressure in the shower was strong. I really liked that there was a vanity space outside of the bathroom and that there was a lot of room in front of the closet. After a full morning and early afternoon of adventuring with my parents, we enjoyed being able to chill out and watch Netflix on the huge TV in front of the bed. Both pools, especially the one nearest to the hotel lobby, were beautiful, and it was so relaxing to be able to see the pool from our patio and from the full-length windows/sliding door of our room. We swam in the pool once on a day that was in the high 60s, and the pool was heated just enough for it to be comfortable. The landscaping around the pool and around the grounds of the hotel is well done. HHilton Honors members get the standard perks: free internet, warm cookies upon arrival. The front door staff folks were very friendly, and always offered us bottled water, which we definitely needed for all the hikes we went on with my parents. The parking lot is large and had lots of available spaces. Parking was a huge pain at the Hyatt House, so we appreciated this feature! Two reasons why I cannot give this hotel five stars. First, MOSQUITOES. A few other Yelpers mentioned mosquitoes, but their reviews were posted in the summer and I had hoped that they would not be active in the winter. Wrong! They are active! All the water used to keep the landscaping lush must make for a good living space. If you have a pool view and open the sliding door to hang out on the patio, a few mosquitoes will get in. I ended up with six bites over the course of our three day stay. BOO! A more minor second point: one morning I bought a croissant from the breakfast bar and it was ridiculously hard and stale. I didn't have much time, so I did not return to the counter and ask for a new snack, but blarf! it was inedible. And when I find something inedible, you know it's bad. Nevertheless: $159 per night (plus $20 occupancy tax) for a large, pool-view room was a great price, and we really did enjoy our stay.
