  • Having worked on the square for years, Cooper's was always a spot that I could go grab lunch, appetizers and drinks after work or dinner. We stopped in here last night for an early dinner, as my boyfriend and I were still downtown after work. To start, I always order the Frites as an appetizer. I love the malt vinegar aioli that comes with it. The fries were crispy, aioli delicious and the presentation on point (they have the paper cone now branded with the Cooper's Tavern name). For dinner, my boyfriend went with the Coopers Burger and I decided to try something completely different and ordered the Grilled Cheese. I would normally never ever order something as basic as a grilled cheese in a restaurant, but wanted to give it a shot (no pun intended as it includes a shot of harvest tomato soup). More on that in a minute. I loved that it was served on sourdough bread, and that there was a mix of cheese both cheddar and herbed goat cheese. The cheddar was oozing out of the bread and the goat cheese was spread on the bread. This was a nice contrast and worked well to upgrade what you would think would be a basic grilled cheese. On the side they served a shot of harvest tomato soup. This was also just as good. I have a hard time loving tomato soup, mainly because I always associate it with the flavorless and thin canned options. But this was a little thicker and did the trick to dip the grilled cheese in. On the side I ordered the chips, which I could do without. You can also order a salad in its place, but I typically have salads for lunch. I ended up taking half my sandwich home, slapped my boyfriends hand away when he tried to have a bite, and ate the rest later as we had such an early dinner. Regarding service, we actually came at a slow time for Cooper's. We were seated quickly, service was good, and we were in and out in no time. The one thing I would say about Cooper's is they do have a limited menu. But, they cover pretty good ground in appetizers, salads, entrees and sandwiches. If you can, ask to sit in the Snug. Also, the outside area has changed from what they used to have for seating. It's more of a picnic table style, which I understand is probably easier for service and you probably can seat more people out there. But, I preferred the rounds.
