  • I came here because I had an abscessed tooth that was very painful & they were open on a holiday, Dr. Poulos was available. I went to have my tooth repaired & turns out I needed a root canal. The root canal was done & a temp crown was placed. I started Amoxicillin. A day later the temporary crown cracked in half while eating & fell off. I went back to get another temporary crown. This time Dr. Poulos uses a permanent glue for the temporary crown. Several days later the permanent crown cane in. I went to Dr. Poulos to have it placed. During this visit, the temporary crown would not come off & the staff & Dr. Poulos had to attempt to cut it in half with their tools, and attempted to force it off. I eventually asked the assistant to stop & just let the dentist work on it. Dr. Poulos eventually got the Temp crown off. I was still completing the course of Amoxicillin. The permanent crown was placed on the root canal.. Once I had that done, I began having severe pain in the tooth & in my neck, inner ear, head & face. The tooth was severely painful. I contacted Dr. Poulos & he prescribed Tylenol with Codeine & more Amoxicillin. I filled the scripts & began taking them on a holiday weekend. The pain continued to worsen so I went to St Joseph's ER for stronger pain meds. Started stronger pain meds. When Tuesday came around after the holiday weekend I went to Az Biltmore Dentristry since it's near my house. I was in severe pain & the dentist there offered to numb me just so that I could function. They sent me to an endodontist who wanted to charge over a thousand dollars to re-do the root canal. I chose not to have him do that. I wanted to have it pulled just to get out of pain. Went back to Az Biltmore Dentistry requesting the tooth be pulled but they wanted $300 to pull it, and I had used am of my insurance already on this tooth. They recommended I go back to My Scottsdale Dentist to have them fix the failed root canal. I went back to them while my mouth was still numb. They are 30 min from my home. I got there and Dr. Stevens worked on my tooth. I informed him that the other dentist and the endodontist both said that there is something missing in the back part of the root canal & bacteria probably got in there and down into the jaw bone causing severe pain. Dr. Stevens went proceeded to work on the back half of the root canal. He drilled a hole in the crown and removed the root canal filling. He got inside the tooth deep enough and the horrible putrid smell of rotting flesh & bacteria made its way out. The pus continued to drain and he must have drained it for a good 10-15 minutes. That pus cane from under the root canal inside the jaw bone & didn't show on X-Ray. He finished draining it and put some chlorine inside there with some other Medicine then he packed it with cotton and seamed the crown. He said to let it heal for 1-/ weeks before he finishes the repaired root canal. He prescribed Vicodin & Augmentin antibiotic. I can't use the epinephrine due to hypokalemia so the numbness wore off on my ride home since it was 30 min drive. I was in EXCRUCIATING PAIN. I was in tears holding my jaw trying to get home as fast as possible. I got home & took pain meds which took 40 min to kick in. I was sobbing in pain as I waited for the pain Med to kick in. The most severe pain I have ever experienced! I have been in bed on pain meds & Augmentin since Tuesday afternoon. Missed Tuesday & Wednesday of work due to severe pain even on high doses of Percocet. Dr. Stevens prefers that the tooth infection heels before he finishes the roof canal. It was so painful - I had severe pain in the back of my neck & inner ear, the side of my head and that side of my face. The neck pain and jaw pain have been the worst! Thankfully Dr. Stevens didn't charge me for repairing the failed root canal. It has been a brutal month with this horrible root canal experience. I'm hoping there are no other consequences related to this infection besides the severe pain I'm experiencing. I'm going to try to go back to work tomorrow on pain meds & hope that nothing else goes wrong.
