| - Can't go wrong with the burgers here!
In town for only a day, we tried to get seated at Citizen Public House but didn't realize it would be a two hour wait on a Sunday night. The hostess there suggested we try 5th and Wine, which was just a few hundred feet away.
5th and Wine has a little of everything on the menu so it can be hard to pick out what you should try. Trifecta for us, the Sunday we went was the last day of Arizona Restaurant Week and also all day happy hour. The restaurant week special was a decent deal... $44 for two burgers of your choice, two full size starters and a dessert.
For burgers, they have beef, portabello, bison, lamb, sloppy joe and chicken. You can also get various salads, paninis, sandwiches, wraps, pastas, pork chops, salmon, halibut and bison tenderloin steak.
Black Cherry Manhattan (Jim Beam Red Stag Black Cherry Bourbon, Sweet Vermouth & Bitters) - Interesting take on the Manhattan. If it came down to a death match, I still like regular Manhattans better, but no regrets since I love cherry flavored stuff too.
Tempura Artichoke Hearts (Lemon zest, Parmesan, Tzatziki) - Loved these, especially with the lemon juice squeeze on top. The only thing that would make these better than they are is if there was a little less tempura batter on them, letting artichoke hearts show themselves a little more. But overall still very good.
Sausage Stuffed Peppers (Sweet Baby Bell Peppers, Parmesan, Mixed Greens,Balsamic Reduction) - Surprise, surprise, these were way better than imagined they might be. Great balance of sausage with the sweet baby bells and sweet balsamic, I could easily taste all three at the same time. If you were thinking about getting these, then get them.
Bison Burger (Arizona Bison, Chipotle Roasted Corn Aioli, Crispy Leeks, Arugula) - My first time getting a bison burger. Similar to beef but with a twist in its rich flavor and not gamey at all. Bison is pretty lean so there's not as much fat or juiciness inside the patty. I liked it and would get it again.
Sweet Potato Fries - Good.
Regular Fries - Good. Sweet Potato Fries were crispier than the regular fries.
Bread Pudding - Mmmmm... so good. Apple and raisins inside a what looks like a large muffin, topped with fresh strawberries and a glaze. The bread pudding was browned and crusted on the outside, tender and moist on the inside.
I did not get to try any wine here so this review is strictly on the food. When we went the restaurant was about half full and service was on point. 5th and Wine is also on the Phoenix restaurant tour itinerary because halfway through our meal a party of 20 from a tour stopped by for a tasting. It's a pretty large seating area with indoor tables, a bar, and also outdoor seating. A good place to stop by for drinks, especially if it's during Happy Hour!
