This review is borderline 3 star but the owner really was a 5 star experience. I arrived with a friend at 1:30 not knowing that they closed at 2 p.m. on a Sunday. If I judged a book by it's cover I would probably not want to eat here, it looks a little "old" but not old with charm, just old. According to my friend who is a regular it got a facelift with plastic covers over the pastries, a mural, new owners, and new tables. All the tables and chairs did not match which is kind of a turn off. But I feel bad saying anything bad since the owner was so so hospitable and sweet.
First she took my friend's order and when she tried to take mine I said I'm paying separate. There must have been a language barrier because that did not happen. I thought she understood me but I guess not. Lost in translation. I truly felt like I was in a foreign country which was kind of fun and cool. She then sidetracked into teaching my friend and I French and even wrote down her name and how to say things. My friend wanted to order and pay for a tart which I guess she missed too. My friend ending up ordering at the end of our meal.
I ordered an omelette, croissant, and a cappuccino which I said no sugar and just this sugar free vanilla syrup.
After ordering I realized she forgot to add in my croissant. I told her I want to buy one and she mumbled something in French. I said "how much?" And she said "free" and something about ordering over $20 and I get a free croissant. I thought she made this up on the spot but nonetheless I was happy about my free croissant.
Our order came and the omelette was delicious and the cheese inside was not recognizable as something I would know. It was really good. My only gripe was the salad dressing was drenched on the salad. The dressing was homemade so they say and it was amazing. Wish there was less dressing though.
The cappuccino was very sweet! I was concerned it was filled with sugar. I hope she used the sugar free syrup but it may have been another lost in translation moment. She even showed me the bottle though so it was kind of weird why it was so good.
The croissant was perfect.
It was past 2 and customers kept coming. I asked my friend if we should leave and we asked the owner of we should and she said no because she still has customers. We stayed until 4:30 p.m. and she continued to serve people who kept walking in and ordering. The last hour of customers all seemed to be French and talked with her in French for a good 20 minutes each, not sure if they knew her or what. But I thought it was really nice that she continued to serve people, it just shows her passion for what she does and how she cares about her business. We kept asking her if we should leave and she kept saying no. Then she handed me a bag of pastries and told me it's free. She said she had to throw them away anyway.
We talked with several of the customers that came in and I can tell that they are regulars here.
I can't speak for their pastries and desserts since I didn't try them but I liked what I had. If I'm honest I think the pastries looked old. I was most impressed with how much the owner cares about her customers.
