I try not to take too many established places for granted but I must admit I really didn't realize that back in 1991 the aviary was in jeopardy of closing due to municipal budget cuts. Thanks to a group of concerned citizens coming together to form Save The Aviary, Inc. they were able to prevent it from becoming so. What is even more newsworthy and much overlooked on my behalf is the fact that the Pittsburgh Aviary was designated honorary status by the US Congress and renamed The National Aviary in Pittsburgh in 1992.
This honor was as evident today as it has been with all of my visits. I usually see something new each time and leave there with a better appreciation of nature and the dedicated team of volunteers and staff who are able to keep up with the responsibilities placed upon them.
Not only is The National Aviary a special place to come and meet some fabulous and extraordinary birds close up, but it is also a great gathering spot for brunch and other fun events that are held here on a yearly basis. I have been able to enjoy a Mother's Day Brunch, several field trips as well as other fundraising gatherings. They also provide a great venue for weddings and birthday parties.
