The new Frank Gehry designed AGO is a definite trip for anyone living in or visiting Toronto.
Its five levels are filled with fantastic collections of European, Canadian and Contemporary art, an extensive works on paper section, and even a small African art collection. You could easily spend five hours here.
Wednesday nights are free from 6-8:30, so if you wanted to slip in and check it out, 2 1/2 hours is not a lot of time. Here's what I recommend:
- The Galleria Italia is Gehry's design at its best. High arcing beams of warm wood framing massive windows will make you feel.....so good. Go on a snowy night to feel like you're in a snow globe but watch out for the long sap filled tree (it's not a bench! Do not touch it!).
- The Canadian section is a must. The very best representations of what our talented citizens have produced over the years.
- Take a seat inside the "Urban Disco Trailer", a camper all decked out with a disco ball and record player. I recommend "You've Got a Friend" by James Taylor.
